Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was spotted by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production of Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious at the time Funicello was added to her group later in the first season of the show, without needing to be auditioned for. Disney proved to be right when they announced that Funicello would be The Mickey Mouse Club's most popular performer and featured as a character in Adventures in Dairyland, her narrative. Funicello's potential as a teenage star was quickly realized. Disney hired Tutti Camerata an established arranger to aid her with her recording career. Annette, however, wasn't too enthusiastic about Funicello singing. Funicello was comfortable making records and enjoyed the experience of working with Camerata. Camerata was one of a few 40-year-old arrangers at the time who understood the fundamentals of the early rock era. Annette Sings Anka - her third album - was probably the first record to incorporate the songs of a rock musician as a repertoire. Funicello was the lead in Beach Party, one of the five beach party movies which were hugely successful. Most often, the film starred Frankie Avalon, these films were produced by AIP however the scripts for each film have been personally accepted and read by Walt Disney to maintain Annette's clean image.
