The father of O'Grady is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. The model was featured in several commercials before shifting into Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's early career was as an Montgomery Ward model, where she was also featured in several commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was later cast in the main character in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in several series. Her roles included the independent and TV-produced films. Her debut role on television was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the big-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996. Each season, she received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting actress in the Drama Series. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
