O'Neil, who was in her high school year when she took part in the auditions, tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol during the first months of 2005. She advanced into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed by her vocal performance. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and bottom two as well as the bottom two. The judges were shocked, and they advised that the public choose Melissa who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil has been always delivering top performance since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it into the final two of the contest. Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
